Frequently Asked Questions About Family Mediation Services

Is mediation right for me?

Mediation is a quicker and cheaper way of resolving disputes rather than court proceedings.

The mediators guide you through the process, but you retain control of the decisions you make.  Court proceedings are a lengthy, expensive and emotionally draining process and the decisions can be taken out of your hands by a Judge.  Professional guidance and support offered by the Mediator will allow you to explore the issues and the options available to you and come to a decision which suits both you and your children.

If you do want to apply to court, you may need to attend a Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting (MIAM) for us to assess the suitability of mediation and provides you with the paperwork to allow you to prepare your court application.

Do I need a solicitor to make a mediation referral?

Anyone can refer into mediation, and we offer a free no obligation discussion with our Senior Administrator and if, at that stage, you feel the mediation is the right choice for you, she can take the necessary referral.  Alternatively, please complete our contact form.

Who are we?

All of our mediators are fully accredited and are experienced Family Law solicitors - as such they can explore the options open to you and guide you through the process whilst also having the knowledge of the family courts.

Our mediators are impartial and whilst they cannot give legal advice, they can help you to achieve the outcome you feel best suits your family. The mediators can reflect your decisions in a Memorandum of Understanding and explain how your solicitor can utilise this to obtain a legally binding court order.

How can you mediate?

Whilst our mediation suites are based in Ripley, Derbyshire for face to face appointments, you can, equally, mediate online and therefore you are not restricted by geography.

How much does mediation cost?

Mediation is a cheaper process than representation through court and whilst the cost of mediation does depend upon the number of sessions needed, this will be fully explained to you at your initial appointment.

There is also a government voucher scheme which provide up to £500 worth of funding towards mediation meetings. The scheme is only available if it involves children, but it is not means-tested and, as long as you have not accessed the voucher previously, it is open to you.
