How it works – Mediation Stages

What you can expect during Family Mediation

Mediation Information & Assessment Meeting

  • Can be offered within 7 working days. If you believe your case is urgent, an appointment can be offered within 2 working days – please contact us by telephone to discuss this.
  • Can be by telephone, online or in the office – whichever suits you.
  • Confidential discussion regarding your case, and an assessment whether it would be suitable for mediation – some cases aren’t suitable.
  • Domestic abuse - We will discuss with you any concerns you have over domestic abuse or controlling behaviour within your relationship and how you feel about using mediation.

Joint meetings

  • Either in office or online, the choice is yours
  • Frequency of meetings – a matter for you – some people choose to have them weekly or some monthly
  • Meetings are usually for 1 hour but if you feel a longer or shorter meeting would be helpful, we are happy to accommodate this
  • We understand that a “one size fits all” approach is not ideal in many cases and we are happy to adapt the process to suit your circumstances

Concluding Mediation

Once you’ve agreed on arrangements for your children, we will create a clear and detailed Parenting Plan that outlines the decisions made, so everyone understands the ongoing arrangements and expectations.

If you are married and have reached financial agreements through mediation, the mediator can prepare the Memorandum of Understanding and will explain the next steps, including how a solicitor can turn your agreement into a legally binding Consent Order.
