Mediation for the Family is a process by which couples can make decisions and reach agreement so as to resolve the practical problems facing them after their relationship has broken down (for example, arrangements for the children, financial support, considering divorce, or dividing their assets) with the support and guidance of a highly trained third person who is a Mediator.

Mediation is an alternative to the more traditional course of each party using the exclusive services of a lawyer and possibly taking the case to court. Mediation instead enables couples to focus on resolving their problems in a constructive rather than destructive way. This also encourages the parties to be fair to each other, to minimise hostility and conflict and to reduce emotional stress, thereby benefiting not only the couple themselves, but also any children who are involved. The mediator will help to ensure that any agreement is both realistic and viable.

Mediation is much quicker and less expensive than court proceedings; the average cost of a settlement by mediation is only about 30% of the cost of conventional court proceedings. In short the couple will retain more of their own money.

Mediation is usually concluded within 4-6 sessions (but sometimes less) each lasting about one and a half hours. Court proceedings relating to the same issues last on average 6-12 months.
